Boiling water on a griddle can seem to be a convenient way to make tea or coffee while camping or just cooking outside your house. Who would want to go inside to boil the water for a cup of tea when there is a huge hot plate available right in front of you?

So, you might be wondering if it’s possible to boil water on a griddle.

Yes, water may be boiled on gas griddles with steel griddle plates. This is because they are essentially working as regular stovetops allowing you to put pots and pans on them.

However, boiling water on a griddle can be tricky. If you haven’t skipped the Physics class, you surely know that the boiling point of water at sea level is 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius).

To boil water on a griddle, it needs to be heated at least to this temperature. Most gas griddles should not have any problem boiling water as they are usually capable of reaching temperatures of more than 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should never put a large pot of cold water on a preheated griddle because the sudden temperature change can lead to warping.

While boiling water is rather straightforward on a gas grill, things are a bit more complicated with electric ones.

The boiling point of water is of course still the same, but most electric griddles will reach lower temperatures than their gas-powered brothers. They still should be capable of boiling water.

However, most electric griddles have their griddle plates covered with a non-stick coating. Putting pots on this surface may result in scratches and damage to the coating.

So, while boiling water on an electric griddle is technically possible, it’s not something I would recommend as you may end up damaging the cooking surface of your precious grilling companion.

There are however some electric griddles that have stainless steel or cold-rolled steel plates. These are perfectly safe to boil water on.

So we already know that boiling water is possible on both gas and electric griddles. But what about the Blackstone griddle, one of the most popular models on the market?

Blackstone griddles are available in both gas and electric versions.

The gas version of Blackstone griddles usually has no trouble reaching over 500 degrees Fahrenheit which is clearly more than enough to boil water.

All Blackstone gas griddles are equipped with cold-rolled steel top plates which means you don’t have to worry about scratching the surface.

The E-series has a non-stick coating so you should not put any pots on it.

The time it takes to boil water on a griddle really depends on the heat of the griddle and how much water you’re trying to boil.

There is no way of knowing exactly how long it will take as it depends on many variables.

However, gas griddles can get very hot and it should not take too long. I would expect it to take about five minutes for a quart of water to reach the boiling point.

If you love to use your griddle in winter, you should know that it may take a bit longer to boil water when the temperature outside is very low.

To speed things up, you can try putting a lid on the pot. This way, the water will boil faster because the heat will be trapped inside.

While boiling water may sound like something you would only need to do in a kitchen, there are actually quite a few reasons why you might want to do it on a griddle.

Here are some examples:

Although you can pretty much use your griddle as a stovetop, there are some differences that may make the process of boiling water slightly more dangerous. Nothing major though.

Keep in mind that griddles have large flat and very hot surfaces. This means that boiling water may start splashing out of the pot if you’re not careful and may immediately start turning into steam when it hits the griddle top. Steam burns are nasty and take a long time to heal.

So, be careful when boiling water on a griddle, and make sure to keep an eye on the pot. When the water starts boiling, turn down the heat or move the pot to a cooler part of the griddle to prevent it from boiling over.

While boiling water on a griddle may not be the most common task, it can come in handy for a variety of reasons.

I have outlined some of the most popular reasons why you might want to boil water on your griddle such as preparing tea or coffee. But there are likely many more uses that I haven’t thought of.

If you’re like me and love to use your griddle for everything, then boiling water on it is definitely something you will try sooner or later.

Just remember to take all the necessary safety precautions to avoid any accidents.

Table of Contents
