Best Griddle Temperature for Cooking Bacon

The ideal temperature to cook bacon on a griddle is typically around 350-375°F (175-190°C). Cooking at this temperature allows the bacon to cook evenly and crispy without burning. It’s also important to preheat the griddle before adding the bacon to ensure even cooking.

Do you absolutely have to have the optimal temperature? No, you can cook bacon on a griddle at any temperature you want. However, I find this temperature provides optimal results. It’s hot enough to get that crispy texture and cool enough to avoid immediate burning.

The cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the bacon and personal preference, but typically it takes around 8-10 minutes to cook bacon on a Blackstone griddle at this temperature.

How Do You Know What Temperature Is Your Griddle?

Well, the only reliable way to check the temp is by using a thermometer. An infrared thermometer is one of the best griddle accessories you can buy. It will allow you to set the temperature of the griddle precisely so you can get perfect results every time.

You cannot presume that setting the burner dial to a certain position will give you the same temperature every time. Many factors can affect the griddle temperature such as the air temperature or wind.

If you have an electric griddle such as the Blackstone E-series, you can set the desired temperature with the dial. Still, it doesn’t hurt to check whether it’s accurate with a thermometer.

What Will You Need To Cook Bacon On A Griddle?

  • Griddle (duh)
  • Bacon – Use whichever kind you prefer
  • Tongs – Metal tongs are best for handling bacon strips on a griddle. Metal spatulas can be used as well but tongs are a better choice for this.
  • Infrared thermometer – Without a thermometer, you won’t know what temperature your griddle is at.
  • Bacon press (optional) – Prevents bacon from curling up.
  • Resting rack (optional) – Helps keep the finished bacon warm but not burnt when it’s finished cooking and you’re still cooking other batches or other food.

How to Cook Bacon on a Griddle

Here’s the step-by-step guide for cooking the perfect bacon on a griddle:

  1. Take your bacon out of the fridge about 15-20 minutes before cooking so it comes to room temperature.
  2. Preheat the griddle to 350-375°F (175-190°C). I usually dial in medium heat and work from there. You can use an infrared thermometer to ensure your griddle is at the correct temperature.
  3. Arrange bacon strips in a single layer onto the preheated griddle.
  4. (Optional) Press down the bacon strips with a bacon press to prevent them from curling up.
  5. Let the bacon cook on the griddle for about 4-5 minutes, until it starts to slightly brown on the bottom side.
  6. Use tongs or a spatula to flip the bacon strips over and cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes until it reaches your desired level of crispiness. If you prefer your bacon more crispy, you can cook it for a little longer.
  7. Once the bacon is cooked to your liking, use tongs or a spatula to remove it from the griddle and place it onto your cooling rack.
  8. Repeat the process with the remaining bacon strips.
  9. Serve the bacon hot and enjoy!

How To Know the Bacon Is Done?

Eating raw or undercooked bacon is not something you want to do, so it’s important to know when it’s done. Since the slices are usually very thin a meat thermometer is not much of a help.

Here are a couple of tips that will help you determine when the bacon is done:

  • Visual cues – The meaty parts of bacon should be golden brown and crispy on the outside, and the fat should be rendered and translucent. If the bacon looks raw or has a lot of white fat, it’s not yet done.
  • Texture – Bacon is typically cooked until it’s crispy on the outside but it’s ok if it’s slightly chewy on the inside. If it’s still very soft or limp, it needs more time to cook.
  • Time – Depending on the cooking temperature and the thickness of the bacon, it usually takes around 8-10 minutes to cook bacon on a griddle. If the bacon has been cooking for this long and looks and feels done, it’s likely ready to eat.

Tips and Tricks for Cooking Bacon on a Griddle

Here’s a collection of tips and tricks to help you get the perfect bacon every time:

  • If the bacon strips curl up too much and you don’t have a bacon press you can use a spatula to press them down.
  • Adding cooking oil to the griddle is not necessary, since bacon releases a lot of grease while cooking.
  • You can cook other food such as eggs or hash browns on the rendered bacon fat.
  • You can even collect the bacon grease from the drip tray and store it for later use. There may be small bits of bacon in there but remove them by straining the grease through a fine strainer.
  • If you are cooking breakfast, cook the bacon first and then follow it with other breakfast items such as pancakes or eggs.
  • Use a resting rack to keep the bacon warm and crisp while you cook other things. Alternatively, keep one of the burners off or on low and transfer the cooked bacon to that part of the griddle. The surface will still be warm enough to prevent the bacon from getting cold.
  • Thicker cuts of bacon may require longer cooking times but many people prefer them this way.
  • If you want to get rid of some of the grease from the bacon, place the cooked strips on a plate lined with paper towels. The towels will wick away the grease and leave you with slightly less greasy bacon.

FAQ

Do you need to preheat the griddle before cooking bacon?

It’s not a requirement per se but it’s a good idea to preheat the griddle for a few minutes. It will ensure the whole griddle has the same temperature which ensures every strip cooks evenly.

Can you cook frozen bacon on a griddle?

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to cook frozen bacon on a griddle. It will take a bit longer to cook though and you may have a hard time trying to separate the strips from each other. For this reason, I prefer to let the bacon thaw at least partly before cooking it.

How do you prevent the bacon from sticking to the griddle?

As long as your griddle is well-seasoned, bacon should not stick to it for more than a couple of seconds as the rendered fat will release it. If you’re having problems, then you should probably check the state of your seasoning. There may be sticky spots or patches where the seasoning is wearing off that are causing the bacon to stick. In this case, you should probably re-season your griddle.

Can you cook other foods on the griddle at the same time as the bacon?

Yes, if there’s still enough space, you can cook other foods on the griddle while the bacon is cooking. One thing to keep in mind is that other foods that are cooked together with the bacon may absorb some of the flavors. It’s fine with some food such as burgers but may not be the best idea with others.
